Choosing the Right Tour for Your Stay

Broome offers an unusually wide range of experiences for a remote coastal town, so it pays to think about how much time you have and what you most want to see. Short stays suit half-day outings such as a reef fishing trip, a sunset cruise or a local sightseeing tour. Longer stays leave room for full-day adventures into the Kimberley, where distances are large and the scenery changes dramatically from coastline to red gorge country.

Consider also the pace and physical demands of each activity. Scenic flights and guided coach or trike tours involve very little walking, which makes them popular with families and older travellers. Fishing charters and gorge walks are more active, so check the departure times, what is provided on board and what you should bring. Our friendly team can talk through the options and help you match a tour to your interests and budget.

The Best Time of Year to Explore

Broome has two main seasons, and the time of year you visit shapes which tours are available. The dry season, from roughly May to October, brings sunny days, low humidity and comfortable temperatures, making it the busiest period for outback and gorge excursions. Many Kimberley destinations, including the Bungle Bungle range and Mitchell Falls, are best reached during these months, when roads are open and conditions are settled.

The wet season, from about November to April, is hot and humid, with dramatic thunderstorms and lush green landscapes. Some tours operate on reduced schedules, and certain roads may close, but scenic flights can show waterfalls at their most spectacular. Whale watching is a seasonal highlight, with humpback whales travelling along the Kimberley coast between roughly July and September. Booking ahead is strongly recommended during peak months.

What to Pack and Bring

The Kimberley sun is strong all year, so a few essentials will make any tour more enjoyable. Before you head out, make sure you have:

  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • High-protection sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing and sturdy closed shoes for walking
  • A camera or phone with plenty of storage for the views

For boat trips, add a light jacket for sea breezes and motion sickness tablets if you are prone to queasiness. For flights, soft bags are easier to stow, and window seats offer the best photographs. Your tour operator will confirm any specific requirements when you book.

Booking Tips and Getting Help

Popular tours can fill quickly, especially during the dry season and school holidays, so it is wise to reserve your place before you arrive. Send us a request through the booking page and we will help you compare options, check availability and organise pick-up arrangements where offered. Booking early also gives you flexibility to build a sensible itinerary without rushing.

Weather and tides can occasionally affect departures, particularly for fishing, cruises and flights, so allow a spare day in your plans if you can. Ask about cancellation policies, group sizes and what is included in the price, such as meals, equipment or commentary. A little planning means more time enjoying everything Broome and the Kimberley have to offer.
