The Beers on the Tasting Paddle

Matso's brews are built around Broome's tropical climate, where a light, refreshing glass matters as much as flavour. The Monsoonal Blonde is a wheat beer with a soft, hazy body and a gentle citrus note, and it is a natural choice on a humid Kimberley afternoon. The Sow's Ear Vienna Lager is the more traditional option. It is malty and smooth, with a clean finish that works well with the kitchen's heartier dishes.

The Mango Beer has won gold and is the most talked-about drink on the list. It uses the fruit of the region and is fruity without being cloying. The Ginger Beer has a warm bite, and many visitors order a second glass before they leave. A tasting paddle lets you try several of these side by side, so you can compare them before choosing a full glass.

  • Mango Beer: fruity, golden and distinctly Kimberley
  • Monsoonal Blonde: light and refreshing wheat beer
  • Sow's Ear Vienna Lager: malty and smooth
  • Ginger Beer: spicy, bold and world-famous

Food Inspired by Broome's Cultural Mix

Broome has long been home to Aboriginal, Asian, European and Pacific communities, many of them linked to the pearling industry. That mix shows in the menu. The chefs draw on Asian flavours, local seafood and fresh produce, and the kitchen team's own backgrounds shape what ends up on the plate.

The dishes suit the setting. Fresh seafood, fragrant curries and shared plates match the pace of a long afternoon on the verandah. Many guests order a few dishes for the table and pair them with a beer from the brewery. For dinner, the menu changes the mood to something more relaxed and social as the light fades over the bay.

The View over Roebuck Bay

The large verandah is a big part of why people come. It faces Roebuck Bay, a wide tidal bay known for its extreme tides, shifting colours and birdlife. At low tide the mudflats stretch out, and at sunset the sky often turns deep orange and red.

Roebuck Bay is also famous for the Staircase to the Moon, a natural event that happens when a full moon rises over the exposed mudflats. The moonlight creates the appearance of steps climbing into the sky. Visitors timing a trip to Broome often plan an evening at Matso's around it, and the venue's position near the water makes it a comfortable place to wait.

Planning Your Visit

Matso's is popular, especially in the dry season from roughly May to October, when visitors fill Broome. Bookings are strongly recommended and are made online only, through the venue's official website. Booking ahead is the surest way to get a verandah table, particularly at sunset or on nights with live music.

The venue's social media pages list upcoming musicians and special events, so it is worth checking them before you go. Wear light clothing, bring sunscreen for a daytime visit, and allow time to linger. The pace in Broome is slow, and the verandah suits that. Whether you come for lunch, an evening meal or just a cold drink, plan to stay a while.
